Using model cars, Leo’s Chop Shop, a class taught as part of the After-School All-Stars in Los Angeles, gives at-risk middle-school students insight in the automotive industry. While showing students the skills necessary to build good models, including assembly, sanding, priming, and painting, instructor Leo Galardo introduces automobile dynamics, such as the engine and drivetrain, as well as teaching them about the lifestyle and culture around vehicle groups, such as hot rods, the low rider scene, and even the prestige of owning a Lamborghini. Leo started sketching cars as a kid in South Leo Angeles, an interest that expanded into modeling during high school. Now the arts director of After-School All-Stars, Leo says he uses the program to spark kids? interest in the automotive world and pass on three core values: commitment, patience, and discipline. For many, working to complete one of the models might be the first time they?ve learned about hard work. But, by the time they?re done with a project, they?ve discovered talents they didn?t know they had, Leo explains. Many want to build another model, and many former participants ask about mentoring new students.
